"We had dinner at La Cantina, Saturday 8 August, 2009, and I can honestly say that this was a meal to far surpass any meal that I have had anywhere in a long long time. Have just returned from a holiday in London and the Lake District and I can rate La Cantina on a level with Rules in London, which has to be one of the very best in London. Superb service, superb food, delightful ambience and Jeff, Charles and Chef, take a bow ~ you deserve to do so well. Thank you Jenny and Di"

"I have visited Usk for years and I believe that this particular restaurant used to be 'Cafe au Fleur'. I visited La Cantina last week and I was amazed in the transformation in the place - absolutely brilliant. I have consequently booked for Christmas Eve and New Years! Great to find a quality restaurant in a picturesque town. Fabulous and keep it up!"

"I went to Usk on holiday last week and I marvelled at the picturesque element of the place. However, what made the holiday was the general laid back atmosphere of the town and La Cantina was integral to this experience.
This restaurant has an excellent laid back atmosphere, the kind of place where you could spend hours just drinking coffee and if you feel the need to eat then you can. The quality of the food was nothing short of orgasmic and the manners and attitude of the staff added to the whole experience of dining at La Cantina.
I would reccomend it to everyone who visits Usk."

"I have eaten in many places all over the world and own a business in the town, and I have to say, La Cantina is the best place in South Wales, it knocks the socks off any other restaurant in town, haven eaten during the evening and weekday lunch, I am avidly looking forward to trying the sunday roast!! The ambience is just right, with a great selection of music, it really does show that you can eat still an fantastic affordable meal. Thanks Guys, Will see you one Sunday soon!"

"We attended your Italian Night on the 29th January 2010, and well, it has to be said, it was the best night we have had for a long time, the food, the service and the music was fantastic. We are looking forward to coming to your Spanish & Irish Night"
From John Durose, Varteg
"La Cantina in Usk is a lovely restaurant where time seems to stand still and the only thing that urges you on is the need to taste some of the delicious modern British cuisine that is prepared there. The laidback atmosphere is mildly soporific, although the courteous and friendly service goes a long way in making your visit comfortable and pleasant. Sunday roast is a splendid affair while the regular week day meals are done excellently.
For lunch, try the grilled paninis and toasted sandwiches or possibly a hearty steak, mushroom and onion pie. In the evening you could expect to start with oak smoked salmon with horseradish panna cotta and fresh lime, followed by main course of filet of sea bass set on a warm potato salad with fresh lemon and capers. Hot puddings and chilled desserts vie for your attention and the eclectic drinks list comprises a sound selection of fine wines and beers."

Hiya Jeffrey,
I waited until today to reply because I wanted to hear what everyone had to say in school.
-the news is good: everyone said what a lovely time they had. they (we) all thought the food was delicious, the atmosphere was great and we were really well looked after. Throughout yesterday and today the whole evening kept being mentioned. Everyone wants to come back and also said they will come with their own families / partners and not wait for Christmas!
Please pass on all our thanks to the whole staff for such a lovely evening.
Best wishes and Merry Christmas to you all,
Lisa Richards, Kymin View Primary School
Hi Jeff,
Thank you so much for a fantastic evening last night. Everyone thoroughly
the meal and had great time. I just hope we didn't keep you to late into the
evening.
Once again thank you for organising such a wonderful dinner.
Kind regards
Ricky, Aero's Flight Training at Filton Airport
I went to La Cantina for an evening meal and was incredibly impressed. There was gentle background music playing and a nice ambience, despite it being small it didn't feel like you were on top of other diners. The food was spectacular, perfectly flavoured for a warm summer evening. It was a little pricey but you certainly get what you pay for.

Travelling through the Welsh countryside we ventured upon Usk and were looking for a breakfast. La Cantina unlike a lot of places at that time in the morning was open. We sat at the table at the front window and the three of us had a wonderful breakfast. My wife claims they served the best hot chocolate she has ever had, that's a big call.
La Cantina was very clean, and the services was friendly and the price was good.
If passing through or staying in Usk, a meal at La Cantina is recommended.

“Even 12 months after the occasion, we remember La Cantina as a very pleasant experience. While on holidays from Melbourne, Australia, we stayed at a nearby farm-stay and they recommended we try La Cantina. Good food, good wine, very pleasant (appropriate & subtle) background music, professional & polite service. So much more sophisticated than we anticipated. Well done!”

“When you visit Usk you must take time to eat at La Cantina on Bridge Street. First, we are certain you will receive a warm welcome and then be delighted at the dining room layout and relaxed atmosphere. The menu offers modern, interesting, local dishes with a slight leaning towards South African fayre. We went for dinner and the food was superb. It was obvious to us that the Chef knew how to freshly cook and present fine ingredients. We went on a Tuesday night and the restaurant was full so we suggest you book in advance to avoid any disappointment. La Cantina has a strap line "Quality is a way of life and our future" This is one restaurant that definitely lives up to it's beliefs."

Whilst visiting Usk today my wife and I decided to stop for lunch. We looked into the La Cantina through the rather dark windows and were only encouraged to go in by two ladies who coming out said "the food is lovely".
We were greeted by a pleasant young waiter who pointed out that the only menus were the ones indicating `Breakfast and Lunchtime`
This was a little disappointing as the other menus [evenings] offered the diner some very attractive fare.
However we chose the tagliatelle dish and the Leek, Mushroom & Chicken Pie with hand cut chips. We each also ordered a glass of red wine .
Both meals were certainly freshly cooked and the pie base was home made. These meals were excellent. The coffee was excellent also.
Whereas the wine was really agreeable I feel that the charge of £4.75 per glass for a Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile and `out of the wood` was a little pricey. Still, if that is what it costs to supply and serve then so be it as it has not put us off this little gem of dining enjoyment.
The taped Italian music was very acceptable-such a change from the modern drivel
One constructive suggestion! If the proprietors were to display the menus [and the relevant times to order them] in the front windows,it would save the embarrassment of peering into the restaurant .

We had planned on going to our usual place for lunch in Usk but were a little early and had a walk first. So glad we did as we discovered La Cantina. You will not be disappointed. Homemade bread, hot lean beef and horseradish, real chunky chips and mixed salad (will not be cooking this evening). Coffee was of a good quality and we had individual pots, nice touch. Staff very polite, even opening the door when we left, that does not happen much these days.
We will be trying dinner soon. Visited July 2011

We were a large party celebrating a special birthday and booked this lovely restaurant at the last minute. The delightful hostess couldn't do enough to make our meal special. We were seated outside in the tiny back garden and the surroundings were so...like a Mediterranean setting, surrounded by beautiful flowers with atmospheric music playing. The food was delicious and served efficiently and with style. I will return to this small gem of a restaurant as soon as possible and can guarentee that anyone going there will be received with warmth and will be given a genuine, warm welcome. My family were VERY impressed. Visited August 2011

My partner and I did not plan to come to La Cantina - I got us terribly lost on way to our booking at the Newbridge and somehow I found the way to Usk. We stopped at La Cantina as I'd looked at their menus online when planning our weekend in the area and thought they were okay, if a smidge overpriced. We arrived at 8pm on a Saturday night and were stunned to see the restaurant was empty! The rugby had been on early that morning and the lady (I'm presuming owner or manager) mentioned they had been busy all day but were unusually quiet that evening. I was worried this was a ploy to get our confidence to stay!I need not have worried. The food was excellent! Both my partner and I had starters and main courses from the extensive fish specials board. I was also very happy to see that these were cheaper than the standard items on their online menu!
I had the Swansea bay mackerel to start, my partner had scallops with black pudding. He'd never had scallops before and really liked them. He considers himself a black pudding expert and he really liked theirs! For main course, I had Rainbow Trout with cucumber sauce and roast new potatoes and my partner had the Kingklip, a South African speciality. I thought the cucumber sauce could be a little odd but it was delicious and did not overpower the fish. I loved the side crockery dish that was provided to put the bones in to - no faffing with balancing bones on the side of the plate! I tried some of my partner's Kingklip and it was even better than the Rainbow Trout (difficult to achieve!) so I could see why the lady had recommended it.For dessert I had the lemon posset (think a rich lemon mousse which was, as recommended, a good clean flavour for finishing with after fish) and my partner had the sticky toffee pudding. He said the sauce was to die for but the pudding serving size was too generous for him to finish!
The lady who helped us was South African, and I think the gentleman who also served us was Italian. The restaurant seems Italian with a South African twist, and they were very friendly and chatty when we asked them questions about their fish tank but were polite enough to leave us alone to holding hands and being couple-ey most of the time. The music was utterly amazing - a mix of traditional Italian with some country & western, plus some peppy upbeat numbers that I can't even think what genre I should pigeon-hole them as!
In conclusion, it's a really individual venue with a personality like I've never come across before. The food was outstanding, and if we find ourselves back in the area, I'll be sure to pop in there again. Visited 08/10/11.
